The mesomorphic body type is the body somatotype that has a sporting genetic predisposition by nature. The main feature of the mesomorphic body type is the ease of developing strong muscle mass.

Only 10-15% of the world's population is of the mesomorphic type and predominates among sports and fitness professionals. (1)

One of the characteristics that can play against this type of physical tan is to assume that your figure will remain for life without much effort. When mesomorphs overestimate  muscle genetics  , they tend to gain weight over time.

This article defines what is mesomorphic, what its characteristics are and what they need to do to increase performance in sports.

Mesomorph - What is it?


By definition, the word mesomorph comes from: meso - the prefix for mesoderm, one of the capable embryos. And morpho - refers to the shape of the body.

The meaning of the word mesomorph originated in the 1940s with the creator of the theory of somatotypes: the American psychologist William Herbert Sheldon. (5)

Sheldon protects the characteristics in 3 types of physical complexion:  ectomorph  , mesomorph and endomorph. Today, his theory is still disputed, although it is included in the curricula of famous universities. (6)


While   endomorphs   pack fat with minimal excess calories, ectomorphs need to eat regularly to gain weight. Mesomorphs are able to quickly increase lean muscle mass.

One of the characteristics of the mesomorph is the higher concentration of creatine phosphate in the muscles. Just as it has been confirmed that there is a difference in metabolic markers in the blood. (7)

If, in addition, the mesomorphic type trains regularly, they will get a   higher metabolic rate  and higher testosterone levels. All these characteristics are a great help for mesomorphs.

In general, the mesomorph has a low   percentage of body fat  . Its high levels of testosterone and allow you to eat high-calorie foods until a certain age. This feature can work against those mesomorphs that degrade food. The characteristics of the mesomorph are:

  • High percentage of muscle mass
  • More creatine phosphate
  • High levels of testosterone and molecular markers associated with muscle development
  • Ease of sport
  • A rude and determined person

An overweight mesomorph?

If the mesomorph constantly eats poorly, it will certainly gain weight.

One of the  reasons for being overweight  in mesomorphs is an excess of junk food or a preference for sweet foods. This type of food is able to give a good boost of energy for training.

However, if you reduce physical activity over time, it is no surprise that your belly begins to grow. Genetics has weight, yes, but it should not be overestimated.

Mesomorphic or meso-ectomorphic body?

The 3 types of physique are rarely expressed purely. In general, man is a mixture of different body somatotypes.

One method of determining whether it is purely mesomorphic or not is to observe the body structure of its relatives, it is inherited from our ancestors. (1)

A mesomorph that does not exercise can switch to an  ectomorph  . While the lover of sweet and fatty foods can switch to endomorphic overweight body type.

To become obvious mesomorhpic body type are needed training for physical exercise and a diet based on  healthy eating ,  to complement training.


The mesomorphic body type has a genetic predisposition to competitive sports, such as athletics.

The characteristics of the mesomorph are: high levels of testosterone, muscle creatine phosphate and a solid personality.

If this type of physical tanning abuses food and reduces physical activity, you are very likely to gain weight.

The ecto-mesomorph is the type of body that is located in the middle - between the meso and ectomorphs.
