What is metabolism and what is it for?

Simply put, metabolism or metabolism is how much energy the body expends daily to live. If energy consumption is greater than consumption, fat mass begins to increase - and vice versa.

Metabolism can be divided into basal (energy expenditure during normal life activity), out of training, exercise and food breakdown.

Basal metabolism  (Basal Metabolic Rate) is calculated by the formula:

men: 66 + (13.7 X body weight in kg) + (5 X height in cm) - (6.8 X age in years);
women: 65 + (9.6 X body weight in kg) + (1.8 X height in cm) - (4.7 X age in years).

You can also perform a bioimpedance analysis of body composition; many gyms have special equipment for this.

Basal metabolism does not differ much throughout life. For women it is about 1200-1500 kcal, for men - about 1700 kcal.

Why do some have a fast metabolism while others have a slow one?

In general, metabolism decreases or increases due to additional training activity (NEAT). Walking, cleaning the house, dancing by the stove, playing with the children - you increase your metabolism. Therefore, it seems that someone's metabolism is fast, while someone is slow. If you spend all day on your laptop or take a taxi home in the evening, your metabolism will not be high.

In addition, the metabolism of men and women is different due to different growth and muscle mass. It should be noted that with age, activity outside of training naturally decreases, muscles become smaller and metabolism slows down.

Can you speed up or slow down your metabolism?

You can change your metabolism. To do this, you need to increase activity outside of training and measure the percentage of muscle mass. But there are no products that speed up metabolism - this is a myth. There are those for the breakdown of which the body expends more energy than they contain. But the complete process of digestion is about 3% of the total metabolism. So these are not significant numbers at all.

In addition, a fast metabolism does not guarantee effective weight loss at all. You can lose weight in any case, if you properly make a diet and training plan.

Don't talk bad about your body and metabolism, in particular, hang labels like "good" or "bad" metabolism. With a healthy lifestyle, the main thing is to feel healthy. And everything else is just nuances.
